Chicago West made her Keeping Up With The Kardashians debut this week. With Chicago’s arrival, Kim revealed how stressful it was naming her third child. She talked extensively of all the names she has considered and what names her family has pitched to her.
“[Kanye’s] cousin’s like, I know, Miracle and I’m like ‘Miracle West?’ That sounds like Miracle Whip and that’s like the biggest stripper name of all time,” Kim said. “And then he’s like ‘what about Previous?’ and I’m like ‘Okay, we just clearly don’t have the same taste in names.'”
MIracle and Precious weren’t the only names to get the ax. Kanye also considered naming their child Rei, Jo and Grace and even his late mother’s name Donda. On KUWTL Kim revealed that she has been looking at world maps considering naming her kid after major cities and countries like Italy, Milan and Rome. She also considered “zodiac signs and biblical names” as well.
Kim then explained why they chose the name Chicago, which I think it pretty obvious. “Kanye is originally from Chicago and the city is really connected to his memories of his mom,” she stated.
“Everyone’s going to be like, “Oh my god, that’s the craziest name!” Then they’re going to go crazy. Then they’ll get used to it and they’ll be like, “Oh, it’s normal” Kim exclaimed to her family members. To be fair, she was right. So many people criticized the name and thought it was dumb.
Kim announced Chicago’s name on her Twitter. Originally Chicago didn’t have a middle name like her other siblings, North and Saint West. But roughly six months after she was born Kim posted a selfie with Chicago and gave her an unofficial middle name, Noel, which is also her middle name.
Giving Chicago a middle name isn’t the only baby naming rule she broke. Kim went on The Ellen Show before Chicago was born to talk baby names. She told Ellen DeGeneres, “I do like short, easy to spell, one syllable names. That’s kind of my vibe.”
Chicago, Miracle, Precious, Donda, Italy and Milan all don’t fit in that category.
Chicago’s long name isn’t lost on Kim. After Chicago was born she went back on Ellen and said, “It kind of messes with me, I’m not going to lie. I really liked the one syllable thing.”
Maybe this is why Kim typically calls Chicago by her nickname Chi.
