Kim Kardashian has been an advocate for social and prison reform, using her platform to voice support in some high-profile cases that she felt were unfairly prosecuted. Now, Kardashian threw her support behind Brendan Dassey from the Netflix series Making a Murderer.
Dassey, who confessed to helping his uncle Steven Avery murderer photographer Teresa Halbach when he was 16 and has served 13 years behind bars, is filing for clemency.
When Kardashian found out the news, she took to social media to voice her support.
“Please @GovEvers Read this letter,” she wrote to her 62 million Twitter followers while directly tagging Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers. Unfortunately for Kardashian and Dassey, the Wisconsin governor will not be phased by the celebrity endorsing clemency.
According to a report from TMZ, “a rep for Evers tells us the Guv is aware of Kim’s interest but quickly added … Brendan’s case will be given the same thoughtful review and consideration as any other case.”
Kardashian had previously helped free 17 inmates with low-level drug offenses earlier this year in just 90 days.
When filing for clemency, Dassey had sent a hand-written letter to the governor.
“I am writing to ask for a pardon because I am innocent and want to go home,” Dassey wrote. “If I would get to go home, I would like to get a job involving video games. I would like to help take care of my mom and one day have a son and a daughter of my own. I would name my daughter Grace and my son Mizar which is the name of a star in the big dipper.”
We will just have to wait and see whether Governor Evers overturns Dassey’s conviction and gives him the freedom that many who watched the true-crime series believe he deserves.
